Developing Tenacity
4 years ago I started acrylic painting. I had been doing drawing and a bit of oil painting up till then but it was a weekend hobby at that point. I started doing daily walks during lockdown in spring 2020, and they initiated the inspiration for the works that have followed in terms of most of the paintings since discovering that acrylic painting was my thing. In May 2024 I’m doing an exhibition with my friends Elisabeth Grant and Pascale Steenkiste called Life in Colour. Its taking place on 24-26th May at Nicolls, Glasgow. It will include some of my work from the last four years, except for the recent Fireweed series.
How do I grow my event organising skills?
The main things an art show of paintings needs is some paintings, a venue and an audience. This month I am going to talk about the behind the scenes non-painting aspects of getting ready for the show.
What is in store for 2024?
Finding out about the show has impacted on my practice, mainly because when I started to plan how to use the space I’ve been offered, I realised I had more wall available than I first realised. Luckily, I have time to make some more paintings and I have proceeded to work a bit differently than I have before to really have a cohesive body of work ready for the exhibition.
What have I learned in 2023?

Realisations at the end of a series
I have finished my series of willow herb paintings and have named then Fireweed – you can see them here. Fireweed is another name for willow herb, because the plant loves to colonise ground where there has been a fire, or where the earth has been disturbed.
