Geraniums
I have been looking closer at geraniums. My focus on geranium paintings started after I looked back through my sketchbook and photos and noticed that I often draw geraniums. I especially like the flower heads which have a very strong structure whilst being an organic form. I love the strange shapes and the intense colours.
By the time I completed this series I realised painting geraniums was initiated by an internal conflict that I had at the time I started the work. My preference for substance over form clashed with a desire to avoid conflict with someone I love, and that person I associate with geraniums. A dream of geraniums is said to symbolize a wilful and robust nature. Maybe that’s why I painted them after my conflict rose up. In the case of the geranium, I like the form as well as the substance.
