The joy of noodling around and creating space
How do I allow the next idea place to land….
Last month a shared my experience of having a break then getting back into a regular creative practice with momentum. This month I want to chat about the playful space where I am available and awaiting the the next “project” to become apparent. I have no idea how long this will take but I have to say its a lovely part of the creative process as long as I stay present to it and don’t try to rush it or control it.
So what does this process look like for me? I have been painting regularly in my studio. Not with any particular goal in mind, just been choosing things I feel drawn to painting, and enjoying doing it. I’ve been playing a bit with materials and sizes and surfaces. I notice that my comfort zone is acrylic on wood, but that what I want to paint right now may possibly require a shift from that.
Outside the studio I have been enjoying walking in the autumn parks around Glasgow, and visiting nice gardens which look so splendid in their decay with golden leaves everywhere. I have been reading new and old favourite books - poetry and art books. I’ve been listening to podcasts and radio shows, and reading substacks. Its all in the mix. Some podcasts and substacks I’ve enjoyed lately are:
Letters From Love with Elizabeth Gilbert | Substack
PODCAST - Alice Sheridan: contemporary artist
RUNDR - Element 79 Promo mix on Spotify: http://on.soundcloud.com/oWcmRfVpJhxUU1176
I think all the noodling around is important even though it can seem aimless from outside. It creates the conditions for an idea to be safe to land. The regular creative practice gives the place for it to kindle. Maybe next month I’ll have more to say on this.
Have you got experience of new creative ideas coming in that you want to share? Id love to hear from you. Happy noodling!
